We're a school of creative writing with locations in SF and Berkeley. We offer small classes, held in comfortable, colorful, living room-like settings, complete with fresh-brewed coffee, tea and munchies. We are a big enough organization to offer a wide selection of classes and teachers, but small enough to ensure intimacy and individual attention. Our 5 to 9-week courses and 1-day workshops include classes in every genre: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, playwriting and magazine writing.
If you're a beginning writer, we'll help you lay the groundwork in basic craft. If you're an intermediate to advanced writer, we'll help you move to the next level. If you're feeling rusty or blocked, you can come here to oil your gears and unlock creativity.
We believe that taking a class isn't just about learning the nuts and bolts of craft. It's also about renewing your motivation and commitment to writing, about connecting with other writers, and about having fun!

Established in 1999
This business is owned and run by Jane Underwood -- a poet, essayist, erotica writer and former newspaper editor -- who founded the Writing Salon in hopes that it might be her path to "right livelihood." Lo and behold, it was. Writers and aspiring writers arrived in a steady and enthusiastic stream that has lasted a decade and is still going strong. What began as one room in the ba*****t of a tiny cottage and 4 or 5 classes per session has grown into more than two dozen classes per session, serving around a thousand students a year.
"We've had plumbers, dancers, doctors, artists, and waitresses take our classes," says Jane. "We've welcomed business executives, entrepreneurs, dot.com'ers, computer nerds, housewives, househusbands, and bellydancers. And professional writers. And even graduates from MFA programs in creative writing! In short, pretty much every kind of person under the sun has been here at one time or another -- so you don't need to worry about 'fitting in.' You will."
